Supportive Services for Veteran Families

SSVF: Ensuring housing stability for those who served

Volunteers of America–Greater New York has expanded its veterans outreach and services as a grantee of Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF). The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Supportive SSVF program awards grants to private nonprofit organizations and consumer cooperatives who can provide supportive services to very low-income veteran families living in or transitioning to permanent housing.

Volunteers of America–Greater New York seeks to ensure housing stability for veterans who are homeless and veterans at imminent risk of homelessness in all five boroughs. SSVF comprises our largest veteran outreach ever as we identify and connect 250 veterans and their families with services to ensure their housing stability. In some cases, we facilitate family reunification to bring families together under our continuum of care. The services we provide are also accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.

As an SSVF grantee, VOA–GNY provides:

  • Housing
  • Crisis intervention
  • Vocational counseling
  • Budget and money management
  • Support in coping with brain injury, post-traumatic stress, and sleep disorders
  • Eviction prevention
  • Family reunification
  • Confidential counseling on issues including military sexual trauma and domestic violence
  • Recreation to facilitate peer mentoring and support

Money Management Services:

Veterans experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness who are struggling to achieve financial stability can receive individual financial counseling through a new program in partnership with the VA and Yale University. Referrals can also be made for voluntary representative payee services and fiduciary services. This program will be offered as part of SSVF beginning October 1, 2023.

Veterans may enter the continuum of care at any point.
