About Us

Volunteers of America

Volunteers of America helps some of the most vulnerable men, women and children in our communities to lead safe, healthy, independent and productive lives. Young people about to age out of foster care; frail, older adults trying to age at home rather than in an institution; preschoolers with developmental delays; families recovering from domestic violence and homelessness; adults living with mental illness or HIV/AIDS; and many more people in critical need of help count on Volunteers of America round the clock, 365 days a year.

Founded in New York City in 1896, Volunteers of America is one of the nation's oldest, largest and most respected human services organizations in the nation, serving 2,000,000 people in 400 communities in 44 states every year.

Volunteers of America-Greater New York, the largest affiliate of the national organization, has more than 80 programs serving 45,000 people in need throughout New York City, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Orange Counties, Northern New Jersey and Connecticut each year. We have earned the highest rating from Charity Navigator for running a highly effective and efficient organization. Volunteers of America-Greater New York, the local affiliate, has an operating budget of $90+ million. With more than 90 cents of every dollar raised going directly to our programs, donors can rest assured their money is being used wisely.

Award-winning programs, skilled and dedicated staff, and generous corporate and individual community partners, bring relief to tens of thousands of people every year who are in desperate need of help. Whether it is basic needs like food and temporary shelter, or more long-term help like permanent supportive housing, Volunteers of America has the commitment, experience and relationships to make an important impact on the individuals and communities we serve.

Many of our corporate partners know us through Operation Backpack, the largest back-to-school drive in the tri-state area benefiting homeless children, or our holiday Gifts of the Heart and grocery gift card campaigns that provide presents to fragile, older adults and the gift of a little more food for the holidays, to people in need.
